Rand Flem-Ath and Rose Flem-Ath

Source Needed

A 1995 argument that Plato’s Atlantis was Antarctica, moved to the pole by a displacement of the crust.

Who they are

Co-authors of one book, filed as one record because the shelf had already listed them together and the argument is one argument. Birth years, nationality beyond what the book’s presentation implies, and any later solo titles are Source Needed. They are not the geologists of the crust thesis. That thesis, as they use it, comes through Charles Hapgood.

The sequence is not a score. It separates the old material, the claim, the citations, the other readings, and the part that can actually be established.

  1. 01

    Ancient evidence

The only long ancient narrative of Atlantis is Plato’s Timaeus and Critias. Plato does not name Antarctica. The ice on that continent is a physical fact with a geological literature. Hapgood’s crust book is a 20th-century hypothesis. These are three different kinds of thing.

  2. 02

    Author’s claim

When the Sky Fell (1995) claims that Atlantis was Antarctica, ice-free at the time of the civilization Plato describes, and that a displacement of the crust shifted it to the pole. The claim belongs to Rand Flem-Ath and Rose Flem-Ath together. It is not Hapgood’s wording, and it is not Plato’s.

  3. 03

    Evidence the author cites

They cite Plato, Hapgood’s shifting crust and ancient-map case, and the geography of Antarctica. A citation of Plato is not an Antarctic inscription. There is no Antarctic inscription in the argument.

  4. 04

    Alternative readings

Ice studies that make the main Antarctic sheet far older than Plato are the competing geological reading. A classical reading that keeps Atlantis inside the dialogues, rather than on a map, is the competing literary reading. Neither literature is filed by title. Source Needed.

  5. 05

    What can be established

Plato is real. Antarctica is real. Their identity with each other is not established. Donnelly’s Atlantis was an Atlantic parent culture, not this polar placement. The Greek row keeps Plato. It does not gain an Antarctic chapter from 1995.

Evidence used

Plato’s Timaeus and Critias, Hapgood’s crust-displacement and map arguments, and the existence of the Antarctic continent under ice. Not an Antarctic text. Not a sediment core filed here.

Evidence and interpretation

The source is kept apart from what the author infers. The inference is not written back into a tradition.

  1. What it establishes

Plato’s dialogues describe a large island empire, outside the Pillars, destroyed in a catastrophe. The dialogues are 4th-century BCE Greek philosophy. They do not name Antarctica.

    What the author infers

When the Sky Fell (1995) identifies that island with Antarctica at a time when it was ice-free and temperate.

  2. What it establishes

Antarctica is a continent covered by a great ice sheet. Hapgood argued for rapid crustal displacement. His pages are modern books, not Plato.

    What the author infers

They take Hapgood’s displacement as the event that moved Antarctica onto the pole and buried Atlantis in ice. The join is theirs.

Criticism and competing interpretations

Attributed to other readers. Not a SCARCE verdict and not a rank.

Geological and ice-core work treats the main Antarctic ice as far older than Plato, which cuts against a temperate, inhabited Antarctica in the age the book needs. Classicists can read the Atlantis story as philosophy, political fable, or a report of an older tale. The dialogues do not decide that, and they do not mention the southern continent. No core citation and no classical commentary is filed by title. Source Needed for both.

Unresolved

Where, if anywhere, Plato’s island sat is open. Antarctica is one modern candidate among others, not a finding. An ice core that would date the southern sheet against their chronology is Source Needed, as is any line of Plato they say cannot fit an Atlantic island. The line is not quoted here.

SCARCE connections

Links leave this page. They do not import the author into the tradition.

  • Greek Traditions — Plato’s dialogues are the ancient text. The Greek row is not an Antarctic dossier.

Not the same claim

  • Charles Hapgood — The crust and map arguments they use. His page does not itself say that Plato meant Antarctica.
  • Ignatius Donnelly — An Atlantic mother-civilization in 1882. A different ocean, and a different mechanism.
  • Graham Hancock — A lost civilization and a map hypothesis. Not this identification of Plato’s island with the Antarctic continent.
  • Antarctica — A continent is not a tradition row. None is created to hold their reading.
