Graham Hancock

born 1950

A modern case for a lost advanced civilization, destroyed near the end of the last ice age and remembered in myth and monuments.

The sequence is not a score. It separates the old material, the claim, the citations, the other readings, and the part that can actually be established.

  1. 01

    Ancient evidence

The sites and texts in the argument are older than his books and are not one archive. Göbekli Tepe is a real Neolithic place, with monumental enclosures in the 10th millennium BCE. Plato’s Atlantis is a 4th-century BCE dialogue. Egyptian and Andean monuments have their own dated histories. An ice-age climate shift is a physical record. None of these is a manuscript of his thesis.

  2. 02

    Author’s claim

Fingerprints of the Gods (1995) and later books argue that a lost civilization, ended by catastrophe near the close of the ice age, left survivors, mythic memory, and traces in monuments, maps, and alignments. Magicians of the Gods (2015) ties that story to a proposed Younger Dryas impact. The claim is his. The sites are not required to agree with it.

  3. 03

    Evidence the author cites

He cites flood and cataclysm myths across cultures, Egyptian and Andean monuments, Göbekli Tepe, maps including the Piri Reis chart of 1513, and astronomical alignments. He draws on a map hypothesis associated with Charles Hapgood and on sky-alignment work associated with Robert Bauval. Those two now have their own pages. His use of them is not those pages, and neither page is an ancient text.

    Alternative readings

Göbekli Tepe’s excavators established an early monumental site. They did not establish a lost high civilization with the reach his books infer. The Younger Dryas is a real cold interval. A cosmic impact as its cause is a disputed hypothesis, not a settled geological fact, and it is not a date for a world empire. The Antarctica reading of the Piri Reis map is an interpretation of a 1513 chart, not a label on the chart. Orion-correlation is a modern theory about Giza, not a sentence in an Old Kingdom text.

    What can be established

He is a living author whose major statement of this case begins in 1995. Some places he discusses are real and, in the case of Göbekli Tepe, startlingly early. A single ice-age civilization of the kind he reconstructs is not an established finding. Myths that resemble each other are not, by that resemblance, a chronicle.

Unresolved

Whether any ice-age population sailed, mapped, or built more than the standard account allows is not closed by saying no, and it is not closed by the book. Flood stories may share a structure without sharing one date. That comparison belongs with the tradition rows. It is not done yet, and it is not done by treating his reconstruction as the rows.

SCARCE connections

Links leave this page. They do not import the author into the tradition.

  • Ancient Egyptian — Monuments he uses in the chronology argument. The Egyptian cell is not his lost civilization.
  • Inca Traditions — Highland monuments he compares. The Andean row does not become his survivors.
  • Greek Traditions — Plato’s Atlantis story is a Greek text. It is not an archaeological report, and it is not this author’s evidence in hand.

Not the same claim

  • Ignatius Donnelly — The earlier published case that distant similarities and flood stories point to a lost civilization. Hancock’s sites and dates are not the 1882 book.
  • Erich von Däniken — Ancient visitors. A different claim, even where a monument is used by both.
  • Zecharia Sitchin — A Nibiru reading of Mesopotamian texts. Not this lost human civilization.
  • Charles Hapgood — Map and crust-displacement arguments this author used. Hapgood’s page is not this lost civilization, and it is not the 1513 chart.
  • Robert Bauval — Orion correlation, used in this territory. Bauval’s page is not an Egyptian text, and it is not the whole ice-age thesis.
  • The Egyptian and Andean rows — He uses monuments from those records. The cells were not rewritten to match the books.
