Inca Traditions
Viracocha, or other figures, orders the world in some Inca and Andean accounts. Local origins differ.
Architecture
Layered world, reciprocity
Layered pacha, reciprocity, huacas and ancestors. Inca cult of the sun and Cusco is an imperial layer on a wider Andean field.
- 01
Ordering figures
Viracocha in some accounts. Not everyone’s creator.
- 02
Three layers, locally varied
Upper, this, inner or lower.
- 03
Gods, huacas, dead
Persons one feeds. The Inca list is selective.
- 04
Human in ayni
Reciprocity is the slot.
- 05
Ancestors who remain
Not a reincarnation system.
- Time
- World-turnings and ongoing exchange. Not a final judgment.
- Agents
- Gods, huacas, ancestors, the living. The Inca sun is one power among others.
- Human slot
- A party to reciprocity. The empire added obligations to ruler and sun.
- Break
- Unfed powers and turned ages. Not an equal anti-creator.
Recorded claims
An evidence label is shown only where the kind of source is already established. No label means unclassified. A label is not a judgment. Source Needed means no source is attached yet. It does not mean the claim is false, weak, or disproven.
Origin / Reality
Viracocha, or other figures, orders the world in some Inca and Andean accounts. Local origins differ.
Source NeededHuman Nature
Humans live in reciprocity with gods, ancestors, and land.
Source NeededDeath / Afterlife
The dead remain active as ancestors. Inca destinations are not the whole Andean record.
Source NeededRebirth
Not a single reincarnation system. Ancestral continuity is the stronger claim.
Source NeededOther Beings
Gods, huacas, and ancestors. The Inca list is not every Andean list.
Source NeededOther Realms
Upper world, this world, and inner or lower world, in a widespread scheme. Local maps vary.
Source NeededWorld Structure / Axis
A layered world. Cusco is an Inca center, not a universal Andean axis, and not Meru.
Source NeededDestruction / Reset
World-turnings are recorded. Not one flood and not a final judgment.
Source NeededHow Truth Is Known
Ritual, landscape, ancestors, and, in the Inca state, quipu and oral tradition. Spanish chronicles are later and partial.

How we know
Where the evidence comes from, and how far it is from the people it describes. The labels are not a score. They do not rank traditions. A manuscript year, a tradition’s own claim, and a date from the ground are kept apart on the timeline.
The Inca did not leave a narrative script we can read. Quipu are largely undeciphered as literature. The main written accounts are Spanish and Andean writers after the conquest, from the mid-16th century on. Felipe Guaman Poma’s chronicle is about 1615.
Those books are after the empire fell. They are outside accounts, or Indigenous voices writing inside a colonial situation. They are not Inca state books. Pre-Inca religions are known from artifacts and from later memory, not from their authors’ theology. Archaeology shows offerings and buildings. It does not state a doctrine. The gap is not filled from the chronicles backward as if they were eyewitnesses to every earlier century.
Original evidence → transmission / copy → translation / documentation → modern interpretation
01
Original evidence
Contemporary artifact or inscription
Sites, textiles, and offerings are contemporary material evidence. Without a readable narrative text, they do not specify belief.
02
Transmission / copy
Unknown / insufficient surviving evidence
Quipu may have carried more than numbers. They cannot yet be cited as chapters of a theology. That insufficiency stays.
03
Translation / documentation
Outside account
Cieza, Betanzos, Garcilaso, Guaman Poma, and others are 16th- and 17th-century documentation. Spanish framing shapes even the sympathetic books. Translation from Quechua into Spanish was already an interpretation.
04
Modern interpretation
Modern scholarly reconstruction
A reconstructed “Inca religion,” and a still wider “Andean religion,” are modern categories. This chart separates the Inca list from other Andean peoples and does not treat a chronicle as a pre-contact manuscript.
The twenty-one questions
Asked of every system. Gaps are recorded as gaps. Nothing here is filled in to make a pattern prettier.
01
Where are we?
In this world, between an upper world and an inner or lower one, in reciprocity with land and ancestors. Inca Cusco is not every Andean center.
Read every system on this question02
What is reality made of?
A world of reciprocal persons — mountains, dead, and deities among them — more than a single material. Imperial Inca language is not every valley’s.
Read every system on this question03
What is a human being?
A participant in ayni, reciprocity, with community, dead, and powers of the land.
Read every system on this question04
What is consciousness?
Not isolated as a faculty. Reciprocity and the ongoing presence of the dead are the recorded concerns.
Read every system on this question05
Where did humanity come from?
Inca origin stories (caves, Lake Titicaca, Viracocha) are not the origin stories of every Andean people.
Read every system on this question06
What happens at death?
The dead remain persons of the community. Mummies mattered to the Inca state. Other Andean peoples do not copy that court practice.
Read every system on this question07
Does consciousness return to embodiment?
The ancestor continues as ancestor. That is not recorded here as reincarnation into a new ordinary life.
Read every system on this question08
Where is consciousness between lives?
The dead stay socially present. A between-lives realm is not the claim.
Read every system on this question09
Are there nonhuman intelligent beings?
Yes. Regional gods, the Inca sun among others, huacas, and the dead. The Inca state list was an imperial selection.
Read every system on this question10
Can those beings become human or appear human?
Huacas and gods are persons one feeds and addresses. A doctrine that they turn into humans is not the Inca claim.
Read every system on this question11
Are there multiple realms or worlds?
Yes in the widespread three-layer scheme: upper, this, and inner or lower. Valleys differ.
Read every system on this question12
Is there a central mountain, tree, pillar, axis, heart, or sacred center?
Layers, and in the Inca state a political center at Cusco. Other Andean peoples have their own huacas. Not a world-tree.
Read every system on this question13
Is the world itself alive?
Mountains and earth can be persons one feeds. That is reciprocity with beings, not a claim that the cosmos is a single body.
Read every system on this question14
Has civilization or the world been destroyed or reset before?
Pachacuti, a turning of the world or of an age, is recorded. It is not Noah’s flood and not a last judgment.
Read every system on this question15
Does history operate linearly or cyclically?
Ages and world-turnings, alongside ongoing reciprocity. Not a single linear apocalypse.
Read every system on this question16
Is there an opposing positive/negative force?
Complement of upper and lower, and of fed and unfed powers. Not an equal anti-creator.
Read every system on this question17
What is humanity supposed to become?
To keep ayni — reciprocity — with people, dead, and land. The Inca state added service to the ruler and the sun.
Read every system on this question18
Is reincarnation a destination, punishment, school, growth process, or something else?
Not recorded as reincarnation, so no role is assigned. Ancestral presence is the different claim.
Read every system on this question19
What lies beyond the visible world?
Huacas, gods, and the dead, and the worlds above and within.
Read every system on this question20
How does this tradition claim humans can know any of this?
Ritual exchange, the landscape, and ancestral memory. Inca administration used quipu. Chroniclers wrote afterward, in Spanish.
Read every system on this question21
Does the structure or motion of the heavens correspond to events, conditions, or consciousness within the human realm?
Sun, moon, and Pleiades are watched for ritual and agriculture, especially in the Inca record. That is not a natal house system.

Why did humanity forget?
Not recorded in this chart.
