08Interpreter · not a tradition
John Anthony West
1932–2018
An independent writer’s case that the Sphinx enclosure was weathered by water long before dynastic Egypt, and that Egypt was a symbolist sacred science.
Who they are
An American writer working outside academic Egyptology. He argued both a symbolist reading of Egyptian civilization and a much older Sphinx. He was not the geologist who described the enclosure. That distinction is Robert Schoch’s record. A biographical citation is Source Needed.
Major works
Titles already named in the file. No publisher, edition, or page is invented. Source Needed means that detail is not pinned, not that the book is rejected.
- Serpent in the Sky (1979) — His symbolist book, following R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz. Schwaller is not a record here. Edition of Schwaller’s books: Source Needed.
- Sphinx weathering case — Developed with Robert Schoch’s geology in the early 1990s. A television documentary of that period presented it. Network, year, and title of the broadcast: Source Needed.Source Needed
The sequence is not a score. It separates the old material, the claim, the citations, the other readings, and the part that can actually be established.
01
Ancient evidence
The Sphinx is an Egyptian monument. Its enclosure is stone. Egyptian art is Egyptian. None of these is his book, and none carries his date in a sentence filed here.
02
Author’s claim
Serpent in the Sky (1979) presents Egypt as a symbolist sacred science, in the line of R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz, rather than as a civilization that invented itself late and simply. Separately, he argues that water weathering of the Sphinx enclosure dates the monument’s core long before dynastic Egypt. The two claims travel together in his work. They are not the same sentence. Schoch’s geology is the second claim’s technical route and has its own page.
03
Evidence the author cites
He cites the look of the eroded enclosure, and the symbolic reading of temple and image. An eroded surface is not a chronicle. A symbolist reading is not the hieroglyphs.
04
Alternative readings
Other geologists do not treat the weathering as a settled proof of great age. Egyptologists do not move the Sphinx out of the dynastic context. A symbolist Egypt is a modern school, not the only way to read the art. Article titles are Source Needed.
05
What can be established
The monument is real and the erosion is real. A pre-dynastic date, and a sacred science older than Egypt, are not established by a text on this page. The Egyptian row does not take his date or his school.
Evidence used
The limestone of the Sphinx enclosure, and Egyptian art and temples read as symbolic science. The weathering morphology he points to is the geologist’s subject. The symbolist reading is a different pile of evidence: art, proportion, and late esoteric writers.
Evidence and interpretation
The source is kept apart from what the author infers. The inference is not written back into a tradition.
What it establishes
The Sphinx and its enclosure are cut limestone. The surfaces are eroded. Erosion is observable. The cause is not written on the stone.
What the author infers
He reads the erosion as precipitation from a wetter climate, and therefore as proof that the core of the monument is far older than the Fourth Dynasty. The age is the inference.
What it establishes
Egyptian art and architecture are dense with figure, proportion, and inscription. Specialists read those in the language of the periods that made them.
What the author infers
Serpent in the Sky (1979) reads the same civilization as a symbolist sacred science inherited from a much older source, following Schwaller de Lubicz. That is a modern interpretive school, not a translation filed here.
Criticism and competing interpretations
Attributed to other readers. Not a SCARCE verdict and not a rank.
Geologists who have studied the enclosure have offered other accounts of the weathering, including processes that do not require an ice-age date. Egyptologists keep a Fourth Dynasty attribution for the Sphinx from the archaeological context, often associated with Khafre. Those are competing readings. No paper is filed by title. Source Needed for the geological critiques and for the excavation reports. Schwaller’s symbolist books are not adjudicated here. Their editions are Source Needed.
Unresolved
What process cut the enclosure, and when, is a geological question that can stay open without a verdict for or against the book. The broadcast that popularized the case is not identified here. Source Needed for that film’s title and year, kept separate from the stone.
SCARCE connections
Links leave this page. They do not import the author into the tradition.
- Ancient Egyptian — The Sphinx and the temples are Egyptian monuments. The Egyptian cell is not his weathering date and not the 1979 symbolist book.
Not the same claim
- Robert Schoch — The geologist of the enclosure. West posed a public case. Schoch’s page is the geological argument, not the symbolist book.
- Robert Bauval — An early date at Giza argued from stars. Not this weathering morphology, and not Serpent in the Sky.
- The Egyptian row — A symbolist essay and a weathering hypothesis are not the tradition’s own claims. The cell was not edited.

The label is the kind of material. It is not a judgment. Primary text, material evidence, and a modern book stay different things.
Serpent in the Sky (1979)
His symbolist argument. Not an Egyptian priestly book.
Sphinx enclosure
The rock establishes a weathered cutting. It does not establish a year.
