Official audio. Official audio on the Blue Öyster Cult channel.
Documented
From Agents of Fortune, 1976. Written by Donald Roeser, known as Buck Dharma. The listen link is the official audio on the Blue Öyster Cult channel.
What can be seen or heard
A reaper who is not to be feared. A hand taken. Flight. Romeo and Juliet are named. Seasons, and a figure of many deaths in a day. A cowbell is in the arrangement. The upload is audio.
What the artist said
Dharma told Songfacts, in an interview reported in 2019, that a heart-rhythm diagnosis made him think he might die young, and that the story imagines a spirit that continues. He has said it is a love that outlasts one death, and that the Romeo and Juliet line is not a suicide instruction. That correction is his.
Outside interpretations
Listeners who take the Romeo and Juliet line as an instruction
Some hear a pact to die together. Dharma has rejected that reading. It stays outside the song.
Living Realm comparison
Death as a passage, and love that is said to continue, can be set beside other death chairs. His heart diagnosis stays the occasion he named. The comparison does not replace it.
