What this plate shows

A street photograph, as a stereograph. Both frames kept, with the Watkins mount. The Lick House front on Montgomery Street: a masonry hotel block, shop windows, the cobbled crossing. Not an aerial photograph. The fire that removed it is not in the picture.

Image type
Street photograph
Structure
Lick House, Montgomery Street.
Region
North America
Documented completion
Opened 1862.
Present status
Burned — The hotel was destroyed in the fire of April 1906. That is later than this exposure. The catalog range is 1861–1873, not a single day. The building had opened in 1862, so the finished front is not from before then.
Source
New York Public Library Digital Collections, Watkins stereo of the Lick House front. The card is captioned “Lick House, Montgomery Street Front.” Both frames kept. Not cropped. Scale of that scan.
