Astrological Traditions

Cosmos and human life participate in an interconnected order; celestial configurations are traditionally understood as corresponding with terrestrial conditions and events.

Open the circuit

Sky and ground are an interface. Birth maps a person onto the pattern. Afterlife and rebirth are borrowed from whatever religion hosts the sky-method.

  1. 01

    Interconnected order

Celestial configurations correspond with terrestrial conditions and events.

  2. 02

    Zodiac, spheres, houses, cycles

The working structure — geometric and periodic, not a mountain.

  3. 03

    Planets, signs, celestial powers

Sometimes read as gods, spirits, or intelligences, depending on host tradition.

  4. 04

    Human in a birth pattern

The slot is a mapped relationship to the sky, not a full anthropology by itself.

  5. 05

    Host-tradition passage

Death, rebirth, extra realms: depends on the religion using the astrology.

Time
Great ages, conjunctions, precession, recurring celestial cycles — plus whatever history the host system supplies.
Agents
Celestial powers as read by the system; gods only if the host tradition supplies them.
Human slot
A person whose birth is a map. What they should become is not astrology’s own closing doctrine.
Break
Benefic/malefic dignities are celestial quality, not necessarily a moral war unless a host religion adds one.

Recorded claims

An evidence label is shown only where the kind of source is already established. No label means unclassified. A label is not a judgment. Source Needed means no source is attached yet. It does not mean the claim is false, weak, or disproven.

How we know

Where the evidence comes from, and how far it is from the people it describes. The labels are not a score. They do not rank traditions. A manuscript year, a tradition’s own claim, and a date from the ground are kept apart on the timeline.

The oldest surviving celestial-omen series are Mesopotamian tablets, especially Enūma Anu Enlil, from the second and first millennia BCE. Personal birth-chart astrology is later, Hellenistic, from about the last two centuries BCE, known through Greek papyri and much later manuscripts.

This row is not one tradition, so it has no single chain. Indian Jyotiṣa, Arabic medieval astrology, and modern Western practice are further transmissions with their own books. An omen tablet is not a natal house system. A modern textbook is not the tablet.

Original evidence → transmission / copy → translation / documentation → modern interpretation

  1. 01

    Original evidence

    Contemporary primary text

Cuneiform omen tablets are primary evidence for Mesopotamian celestial reading. They are not horoscopes in the later sense.

  2. 02

    Transmission / copy

    Later copy of earlier text

Greek astrological treatises mostly survive in later copies and some papyri. Sanskrit, Arabic, and Latin books are other lines, not one stemma.

  3. 03

    Translation / documentation

    Modern scholarly reconstruction

Each language’s technical terms have to be translated. Mixing them into one “astrology” is already an interpretation.

  4. 04

    Modern interpretation

    Modern scholarly reconstruction

The cells on this chart describe a family of practices. They are a modern summary. They do not establish that those practices are the same art.

The twenty-one questions

Asked of every system. Gaps are recorded as gaps. Nothing here is filled in to make a pattern prettier.

  1. 01

    Where are we?

Within an interconnected order in which celestial and terrestrial domains correspond.

  2. 02

    What is reality made of?

An interconnected order. Celestial configurations are traditionally understood to correspond with terrestrial conditions and events.

  3. 03

    What is a human being?

A human existing within a larger cosmic pattern. Birth circumstances are traditionally used to map that relationship.

  4. 04

    What is consciousness?

Depends on the host tradition. Astrology maps a person’s relationship to cosmic pattern; it does not, by itself, define what consciousness is made of.

  5. 05

    Where did humanity come from?

Humans exist within a larger cosmic pattern. Astrology does not, by itself, replace the origin story of its host tradition.

  6. 06

    What happens at death?

Depends upon the religious or philosophical tradition in which the astrology operates.

  7. 07

    Does consciousness return to embodiment?

Varies. Reincarnation is prominent in Indian/Jyotiṣa traditions but is not inherent to every astrological system.

  8. 08

    Where is consciousness between lives?

Depends on the host tradition. Astrology does not, by itself, locate consciousness between lives.

  9. 09

    Are there nonhuman intelligent beings?

Planets, stars, signs, and celestial powers. Some traditions associate celestial bodies with gods, spirits, intelligences, or other beings.

Read every system on this question
  10. 10

Can those beings become human or appear human?

Some traditions associate celestial bodies with gods, spirits, or intelligences. Becoming human is not inherent to astrology as such.

  11. 11

Are there multiple realms or worlds?

Celestial and terrestrial domains correspond. Additional realms depend upon the underlying tradition.

  12. 12

Is there a central mountain, tree, pillar, axis, heart, or sacred center?

Zodiac, planetary spheres, houses, directions, celestial cycles, and geometric relationships — a celestial, not mountainous, structure.

  13. 13

    Is the world itself alive?

Cosmos and human life participate in an interconnected order. Correspondence is the claim — not that the world is one animal.

Has civilization or the world been destroyed or reset before?

Great ages, conjunction cycles, precessional/world-age concepts, and recurring celestial cycles appear in different systems.

  15. 15

Does history operate linearly or cyclically?

Recurring celestial cycles, great ages, conjunctions, and world-age concepts. Linearity or cyclicity of history depends on the host system using the sky.

  16. 16

Is there an opposing positive/negative force?

Benefic and malefic dignities appear in many systems. That is celestial quality, not necessarily a cosmic moral war — unless the host religion supplies one.

  17. 17

What is humanity supposed to become?

Astrology maps a pattern; it does not, by itself, state what humanity should become. That belongs to the host philosophy or religion.

  18. 18

Is reincarnation a destination, punishment, school, growth process, or something else?

Varies. Prominent in Indian/Jyotiṣa traditions; not inherent to every astrological system.

  19. 19

What lies beyond the visible world?

Celestial domains corresponding to the terrestrial. Additional realms depend on the underlying tradition.

  20. 20

How does this tradition claim humans can know any of this?

Observation of celestial cycles, calculated positions, inherited interpretive systems, and claimed correspondence between celestial and terrestrial patterns.

  21. 21

Does the structure or motion of the heavens correspond to events, conditions, or consciousness within the human realm?

Yes. That is the claim: celestial configurations correspond with terrestrial conditions and events, and birth maps a person’s relationship to the pattern.
