25Ancient
Hermetic Traditions
Divine Mind and an ordered cosmos, often called living. The Hermetica do not agree in every treatise.
Architecture
Mind, living cosmos, sympathy
Mind and a cosmos often alive. The human can know and ascend. Above corresponds to below. The Asclepius’s Egyptian crisis is one text.
- 01
Divine Mind
Source in the classical dialogues. Treatises still differ.
- 02
Living hierarchical cosmos
Spheres, not a world-tree.
- 03
Powers and daimones
Later ceremonial systems multiply spirits beyond the ancient books.
- 04
Human participant in Mind
Mortal and able to know.
- 05
Ascent or regeneration
Not saṃsāra, and not in every treatise.
- Time
- Cosmic cycles, plus one text’s lament and restoration. Not a universal apocalypse.
- Agents
- God, Mind, cosmic powers. Hermes is the revealer-figure.
- Human slot
- A knower. Becoming divine, where claimed, is by knowledge, not by a church’s sacrament list.
- Break
- Ignorance and bodily passion in some texts. The cosmos is not routinely the enemy.
Recorded claims
An evidence label is shown only where the kind of source is already established. No label means unclassified. A label is not a judgment. Source Needed means no source is attached yet. It does not mean the claim is false, weak, or disproven.
Origin / Reality
Divine Mind and an ordered cosmos, often called living. The Hermetica do not agree in every treatise.
Source NeededHuman Nature
A mortal who shares in Mind and in body, and who can know the divine.
Source NeededDeath / Afterlife
Ascent or return of the soul is taught in several texts. Not one diagram.
Source NeededRebirth
Regeneration is a Hermetic theme. It is not Indian reincarnation, and later Hermeticism does not use it one way.
Source NeededOther Beings
God, Mind, and cosmic powers or daimones. Later ceremonial Hermeticism widens the hierarchy.
Source NeededOther Realms
Heavenly spheres and a divine realm above them, in the classical Hermetica.
Source NeededWorld Structure / Axis
A living hierarchical cosmos. Above and below correspond. That is not, by itself, a birth chart.
Source NeededDestruction / Reset
The Asclepius laments a loss and return of sacred order in Egypt. Not a universal Hermetic apocalypse.
Source NeededHow Truth Is Known
Hermes as revealer, vision, and the sympathy of the cosmos. Later ceremonial practice is a further tradition.

Sources & EvidenceShowHideNo source is attached yet. Source Needed is a research gap, not a judgment.
The tradition or source
What that source says. Not a scholar’s retelling, and not a SCARCE inference.
None attached.
A modern researcher
What a scholar or other modern writer says about the source. Not the source’s own words.
None attached.
SCARCE
What this project infers or sets beside the records. Not what the source said.

How we know
Where the evidence comes from, and how far it is from the people it describes. The labels are not a score. They do not rank traditions. A manuscript year, a tradition’s own claim, and a date from the ground are kept apart on the timeline.
The Greek Corpus Hermeticum survives in Byzantine manuscripts. The treatises are commonly dated by scholars to Roman Egypt, roughly the 1st to 3rd centuries CE. That is a reconstruction, not a date written on a title page. The Asclepius survives in Latin.
A historical Hermes Trismegistus is not established. The figure is traditional. Marsilio Ficino’s Latin translation (15th century) is a Renaissance layer. The Emerald Tablet is a medieval Arabic and Latin text, not a chapter of the Greek corpus. Modern occult orders are a further interpretation. None of these is an eyewitness report from a primordial Hermes.
Original evidence → transmission / copy → translation / documentation → modern interpretation
01
Original evidence
Later copy of earlier text
The oldest evidence for the dialogues is their manuscript transmission, already far from any 2nd-century copyist we cannot name. There is no contemporary autograph.
02
Transmission / copy
Later copy of earlier text
Byzantine Greek copies, the Latin Asclepius, and later printed editions are different points in the chain. They are not one moment.
03
Translation / documentation
Later religious or traditional text
Ficino’s translation made the corpus a Renaissance book. It is documentation and also a new setting. It is not the Byzantine codex.
04
Modern interpretation
Modern scholarly reconstruction
Scholarly dating of the Hermetica, and modern Hermetic orders that treat them as perennial wisdom, are separate interpretations. This chart keeps the ancient treatises, the Emerald Tablet, and later magic from being one source.
The twenty-one questions
Asked of every system. Gaps are recorded as gaps. Nothing here is filled in to make a pattern prettier.
01
Where are we?
In a cosmos ordered by divine Mind, often described as alive and layered into spheres.
Read every system on this question02
What is reality made of?
A cosmos from divine Mind, sometimes said to be living and ensouled. Treatises differ on how matter stands to God.
Read every system on this question03
What is a human being?
A mortal joined to Mind, able to know God and the cosmos. Not every later Hermetic current keeps that formula.
Read every system on this question04
What is consciousness?
Mind is what can wake in a human. The Hermetica treat that as participation in divine Mind, not as a brain theory.
Read every system on this question05
Where did humanity come from?
Humanity is a special making, able to know and to share in the divine, in several Hermetic tellings. Not one anthropogony.
Read every system on this question06
What happens at death?
Several texts describe the soul giving back planetary qualities as it ascends. That itinerary is not in every treatise, and later Hermeticism varies.
Read every system on this question07
Does consciousness return to embodiment?
On Rebirth speaks of regeneration into Mind. That is not a claim that every soul recycles through species, and it is not the whole Hermetic library.
Read every system on this question08
Where is consciousness between lives?
The ascent through the spheres is the nearest picture, in the texts that have it. It is an ascent, not a karmic pause.
Read every system on this question09
Are there nonhuman intelligent beings?
Yes. Divine Mind, the powers of the spheres, and daimones in some dialogues. Later magic names many more spirits than the ancient treatises do.
Read every system on this question10
Can those beings become human or appear human?
Hermes teaches as a divine revealer in human conversation. The doctrine is not that God becomes a mortal.
Read every system on this question11
Are there multiple realms or worlds?
Yes. Spheres of the planets and a divine region beyond them, in the classical ascent texts.
Read every system on this question12
Is there a central mountain, tree, pillar, axis, heart, or sacred center?
The structure is spheres around the earth in the ancient picture, not a tree or a Meru.
Read every system on this question13
Is the world itself alive?
Several Hermetic texts call the cosmos a living, ensouled whole. That is a Hermetic claim. It is not the working synthesis, and it is not in every treatise.
Read every system on this question14
Has civilization or the world been destroyed or reset before?
The Asclepius describes a coming ruin and restoration of Egypt’s sacred order. Other Hermetic texts do not share that scene.
Read every system on this question15
Does history operate linearly or cyclically?
The cosmos has cycles. The Asclepius adds a crisis and restoration in Egypt. Neither is a last judgment of all souls in the Christian sense.
Read every system on this question16
Is there an opposing positive/negative force?
Passions and some daimones threaten the soul in certain texts. The cosmos itself is often divine. Not Zoroastrian dualism.
Read every system on this question17
What is humanity supposed to become?
To know God and to live by Mind. Some texts speak of being made divine by that knowledge. Later alchemy and magic aim differently and should not be folded in.
Read every system on this question18
Is reincarnation a destination, punishment, school, growth process, or something else?
Regeneration in the Hermetica is a transformation by Mind. Do not relabel it as saṃsāra. Later Hermetic writers sometimes add reincarnation; that is not automatic.
Read every system on this question19
What lies beyond the visible world?
Mind, God, and the powers of the spheres above the visible sky.
Read every system on this question20
How does this tradition claim humans can know any of this?
Dialogues attributed to Hermes, and attention to the sympathies of the cosmos. Renaissance and modern Hermetic orders are heirs, not the ancient speakers.
Read every system on this question21
Does the structure or motion of the heavens correspond to events, conditions, or consciousness within the human realm?
Yes. Sympathy of above and below is Hermetic. Later practice builds magic and astrology on it. The ancient claim is the sympathy, not one horoscope method.
Read every system on this question22
Why did humanity forget?
The filed lines say Mind can wake in a human, and that the Asclepius laments a loss of sacred order in Egypt. They do not say why humanity forgot.
