Irish Traditions

Irish tales begin with successive settlements, not creation from nothing.

Recorded claims

An evidence label is shown only where the kind of source is already established. No label means unclassified. A label is not a judgment. Source Needed means no source is attached yet. It does not mean the claim is false, weak, or disproven.

How we know

Where the evidence comes from, and how far it is from the people it describes. The labels are not a score. They do not rank traditions. A manuscript year, a tradition’s own claim, and a date from the ground are kept apart on the timeline.

Irish stories survive in medieval Christian manuscripts, the Táin in copies from the 12th century and later.

Those medieval tales may preserve older oral material. They do not say so on the page in a way that dates the story to the Iron Age. No start century is assigned here.

Original evidence → transmission / copy → translation / documentation → modern interpretation

  1. 01

    Original evidence

    Unknown / insufficient surviving evidence

Medieval Irish literature is later traditional narrative, written by Christians.

  2. 02

    Transmission / copy

    Unknown / insufficient surviving evidence

The Táin is known from copies, not from an authorial manuscript.

  3. 03

    Translation / documentation

    Unknown / insufficient surviving evidence

Translation into English is a further step. A Victorian retelling is not the manuscript.

  4. 04

    Modern interpretation

    Unknown / insufficient surviving evidence

What is not named as Irish in the existing file is Unclassified / Source Needed. Welsh and Gaulish claims are not copied here.
