Dao preceding differentiation

Open the circuit

Dao precedes differentiation. Heaven–Earth–humanity is one process. The human aligns by cultivation. Death and rebirth teachings vary by stream.

  1. 01

    Dao

Underlying or preceding the ten thousand things.

  2. 02

    Heaven, Earth, humanity

Interconnected process — an axis of relation more than a named mountain here.

  3. 03

    Immortals, spirits, deities

    Populated spiritual and celestial domains.

  4. 04

    Participating human life

Not a spectator. Cultivation is the interface.

  5. 05

    Spirit and death (varied)

Some later streams contain reincarnation. Not a single Daoist socket.

Time
Transformation and cycles. Polarity inside process, not a last judgment as the governing clock.
Agents
Immortals, spirits, deities; the Dao is not a person-opponent dualism.
Human slot
A life that can cultivate alignment — longevity/immortality in some streams, not all.
Break
Misalignment with process. Not a devil versus a creator.

Recorded claims

An evidence label is shown only where the kind of source is already established. No label means unclassified. A label is not a judgment. Source Needed means no source is attached yet. It does not mean the claim is false, weak, or disproven.

How we know

Where the evidence comes from, and how far it is from the people it describes. The labels are not a score. They do not rank traditions. A manuscript year, a tradition’s own claim, and a date from the ground are kept apart on the timeline.

The oldest Daodejing manuscripts are the Guodian bamboo slips, from a tomb of about 300 BCE, and the Mawangdui silk copies, buried in 168 BCE.

Those are copies, not a signed autograph of Laozi. A 6th-century BCE Laozi is traditional and historically disputed. Religious Daoism as a church (the Celestial Masters, traditionally 2nd century CE) is a later movement. It is not the Daodejing. The chart’s “Daoist” row covers more than one of these layers, and the dates must not be blended.

Original evidence → transmission / copy → translation / documentation → modern interpretation

  1. 01

    Original evidence

    Later copy of earlier text

Guodian and Mawangdui are the earliest substantial copies of the Daodejing. They already differ from the later received text. Zhuangzi is a separate early book.

  2. 02

    Transmission / copy

    Later religious or traditional text

The received Daodejing, the Daoist canon of later dynasties, and ritual lineages are subsequent transmissions. They are not the bamboo slips.

  3. 03

    Translation / documentation

    Modern scholarly reconstruction

Modern translations choose among those versions. Which slip a sentence comes from should matter, and often is not shown.

  4. 04

    Modern interpretation

    Modern scholarly reconstruction

Scholars argue about who wrote the books and when. That argument is not a line in the Guodian text. This chart does not settle it.

The twenty-one questions

Asked of every system. Gaps are recorded as gaps. Nothing here is filled in to make a pattern prettier.

  1. 01

    Where are we?

Within Heaven, Earth, and humanity as an interconnected process of the Dao.

  2. 02

    What is reality made of?

The Dao underlying or preceding differentiation. The ten thousand things arise as process, not as a single made artifact.

  3. 03

    What is a human being?

A life that participates in cosmic process — Heaven, Earth, and humanity together.

  4. 04

    What is consciousness?

Not isolated as a modern technical term. Human life participates in cosmic process; cultivation addresses spirit, vitality, and alignment with the Dao.

  5. 05

    Where did humanity come from?

Human life arises as participation in cosmic process, from the Dao preceding differentiation.

    What happens at death?

Varied traditions concerning spirit and death.

  7. 07

    Does consciousness return to embodiment?

Some later traditions contain reincarnation concepts; it is not a single Daoist doctrine.

  8. 08

    Where is consciousness between lives?

Varied traditions concerning spirit and death; a single between-lives location is not recorded as shared doctrine.

  9. 09

    Are there nonhuman intelligent beings?

    Yes. Immortals, spirits, deities.

  10. 10

Can those beings become human or appear human?

Immortals, spirits, and deities are recorded. Crossing appearance is present in later narrative traditions; it is not a single shared rule here.

  13. 13

    Is the world itself alive?

Human life participates in cosmic process. Heaven, Earth, and humanity are interconnected — closer to a living process than to a dead machine, without making the world one animal.

  16. 16

Is there an opposing positive/negative force?

Differentiation includes complementary processes (often framed as yin/yang in the wider culture). That is polarity inside the Dao, not a devil versus a creator.

  17. 17

What is humanity supposed to become?

Alignment with the Dao through cultivation. Some streams aim at longevity or immortality; this is not one doctrine.

  21. 21

Does the structure or motion of the heavens correspond to events, conditions, or consciousness within the human realm?
