Old World photography
Street scenes, demolition, construction, rooftops, a dome, a completed boulevard. The camera on the ground or on a known high point — not a lithograph pretending to be a lens.

c. 1865·London
On the rooftops of London
Unknown photographer. National Library of Ireland, STP_0424.
Elevated photograph
A camera on London roofs. Chimney pots in the near field. St Paul’s dome in the distance. Smoke, brick, and a real horizon. This is an elevated photograph, not a bird’s-eye lithograph. The city is whatever the lens could hold from that roof, that day.

Panorama from the dome of St Peter’s
Unidentified photographer. Albumen print from collodion negative.
Elevated photograph · Surviving
Rome photographed from the cupola of St Peter’s: the basilica fabric in the foreground, the city spread beyond. An elevated photograph from a known high point, not a balloon plate and not a drawn bird’s-eye. The camera is on the dome.

c. 1870·Vienna
St Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna
Michael Frankenstein, photographer.
Elevated photograph · Surviving
The Stephansdom photographed with the roofs and streets around it. This is not a bird’s-eye of all Vienna. It is a camera record of the cathedral and the city’s fabric at that spot, about 1870.
