Recorded claims
An evidence label is shown only where the kind of source is already established. No label means unclassified. A label is not a judgment. Source Needed means no source is attached yet. It does not mean the claim is false, weak, or disproven.
Origin / Reality
Heaven and generative process. Not one creation myth across Chinese tradition.
Source NeededHuman Nature
A person between Heaven and Earth, with duties to ancestors. Soul-accounts differ.
Source NeededDeath / Afterlife
Ancestors continue and can be served. Underworld bureaucracies belong to some popular streams, not all.

Rebirth is widespread where Buddhist influence is present. It is not every older Chinese cosmology.

What that source says. Not a scholar’s retelling, and not a SCARCE inference.

How we know
Where the evidence comes from, and how far it is from the people it describes. The labels are not a score. They do not rank traditions. A manuscript year, a tradition’s own claim, and a date from the ground are kept apart on the timeline.
The earliest Chinese writing is Shang oracle bones, about 1250–1050 BCE. They are contemporary records of royal divination. They are not a cosmology textbook and not a village temple’s manual.
This row covers classical correlative thought, ancestor rite, and later popular religion. Those do not share one evidence date. Han editors shaped the classics. Popular temples are known largely from much later stele, gazetteers, and observation. A Shang bone does not document a 19th-century festival. The gap is the point of the row’s caution.
Original evidence → transmission / copy → translation / documentation → modern interpretation
01
Original evidence
Contemporary artifact or inscription
Oracle bones and Zhou bronze inscriptions are contemporary primary evidence for what they actually record: divinations, gifts, appointments. Not a full theology.
02
Transmission / copy
Later copy of earlier text
The classics reach us through later editorial traditions. Commentaries are later traditional texts attached to them.
03
Translation / documentation
Modern scholarly reconstruction
Sinological translation is modern documentation. Popular religion was often described by officials and by foreign observers, which makes many reports outside accounts.
04
Modern interpretation
Modern scholarly reconstruction
“Chinese traditional religion” is a modern category, used here so it is not silently merged with Daoism. The category is an interpretation. It is not an ancient book’s title.
The twenty-one questions
Asked of every system. Gaps are recorded as gaps. Nothing here is filled in to make a pattern prettier.
01
Where are we?
Between Heaven and Earth, in a world of ancestors, gods, and correlative order. The picture is not the same in classical cosmology and in every temple.
Read every system on this question02
What is reality made of?
Often qi, patterned by yin-yang and the five phases, under Heaven. That classical picture is not every popular account, and it is not a laboratory physics.
Read every system on this question03
What is a human being?
A being with duties to Heaven and ancestors. Hun and po, or other soul-divisions, appear in some classical and popular accounts and are not universal.
Read every system on this question04
What is consciousness?
Heart-mind (xin) is a classical term for knowing and feeling. It is not one theory across popular religion, Confucian learning, and later medicine.
Read every system on this question05
Where did humanity come from?
Several origins circulate, including shaping by Nüwa in some myths. Classical cosmology often speaks of Heaven’s generating rather than one founder myth.
Read every system on this question06
What happens at death?
Ancestors are fed and housed in tablets and rites. Some popular traditions add courts of the underworld and, under Buddhist influence, rebirth. Not every family does all of this.
Read every system on this question07
Does consciousness return to embodiment?
Common where Buddhist rebirth has been taken in. Not attested as the ancient correlative cosmology’s own claim.
Read every system on this question08
Where is consciousness between lives?
Where rebirth is believed, popular religion sometimes describes courts and waiting. Where it is not believed, the ancestor is simply the ancestor.
Read every system on this question09
Are there nonhuman intelligent beings?
Yes. Gods of locality and office, ancestors, and ghosts. The bureaucracy of gods is a popular image, not a single canon.
Read every system on this question10
Can those beings become human or appear human?
Gods appear, possess, and are imaged as persons. Some gods are deified dead humans. A universal incarnation doctrine is not the religion.
Read every system on this question11
Are there multiple realms or worlds?
Heaven, the human world, and places of the dead are widely distinguished. How many courts or heavens depends on the stream and on Buddhist borrowing.
Read every system on this question12
Is there a central mountain, tree, pillar, axis, heart, or sacred center?
Heaven over Earth, with the human realm between, is the usual vertical. A world-tree is not the standard. Beijing’s altar is imperial ritual, not every village’s axis.
Read every system on this question13
Is the world itself alive?
Heaven, Earth, and humanity correspond, and qi is often treated as vital. That is not the same sentence as ‘reality is one organism.’
Read every system on this question14
Has civilization or the world been destroyed or reset before?
Dynasties fall when mandate fails. Cosmic ages appear in some texts. A single religious apocalypse is not the pattern.
Read every system on this question15
Does history operate linearly or cyclically?
Dynastic cycles and correlative cycles are common images. They are not the Buddhist kalpa, even where Buddhism is also practiced.
Read every system on this question16
Is there an opposing positive/negative force?
Disorder, failed mandate, hungry ghosts, and unbalanced forces. Not one Satan figure as the key to the cosmology.
Read every system on this question17
What is humanity supposed to become?
To fulfill relations with Heaven, the living, and the dead. Immortality, sagehood, and ordinary blessing are different aims and not all ‘Chinese religion.’
Read every system on this question18
Is reincarnation a destination, punishment, school, growth process, or something else?
Where present, it usually comes with Buddhist teaching and carries that teaching’s moral weight. It is not hereby made native to every Chinese cosmology.
Read every system on this question19
What lies beyond the visible world?
Heaven, gods, ancestors, and ghosts. Some streams add extensive underworld offices.
Read every system on this question20
How does this tradition claim humans can know any of this?
Family rite, temple cult, the classics and their cosmology, and divination. Different specialists know different parts.
Read every system on this question21
Does the structure or motion of the heavens correspond to events, conditions, or consciousness within the human realm?
Yes in correlative cosmology: Heaven’s pattern is read against human and political order. That is not a Western system of houses, and it is not every household’s practice.

Why did humanity forget?
Not recorded in this chart.
