Anishinaabe / Ojibwe Traditions
Creation understood relationally; accounts vary.
Architecture
Relational living world
Relational creation. Land, water, and cosmos are not a machine-map. Other-than-human persons are on the same living field. Ceremony, dream, and elders are the interface.
- 01
Relational creation
Accounts vary. The world is not first a mechanism.
- 02
Land, water, cosmos
Understood together. Not a Meru/Yggdrasil diagram in this record.
- 03
Manidoog / other-than-human persons
Persons, not resources. Appearance and relationship are the wrong frame if turned into ‘become human’ mechanics.
- 04
Embedded human
A relative among persons, not a spectator of nature.
- 05
Continued spiritual existence
Death is not extinction. Rebirth traditions vary; no single between-lives map here.
- Time
- Flood and re-creation exist. Time is not recorded as a simple line or wheel.
- Agents
- Manidoog and other-than-human persons; elders as knowing-path.
- Human slot
- To live inside right relationships — land, water, cosmos, other persons.
- Break
- Powers that can help or harm exist. A single cosmic anti-god is not the record used here.
Recorded claims
An evidence label is shown only where the kind of source is already established. No label means unclassified. A label is not a judgment. Source Needed means no source is attached yet. It does not mean the claim is false, weak, or disproven.

The tradition or source
What that source says. Not a scholar’s retelling, and not a SCARCE inference.
None attached.
A modern researcher
What a scholar or other modern writer says about the source. Not the source’s own words.
None attached.
SCARCE
What this project infers or sets beside the records. Not what the source said.

How we know
Where the evidence comes from, and how far it is from the people it describes. The labels are not a score. They do not rank traditions. A manuscript year, a tradition’s own claim, and a date from the ground are kept apart on the timeline.
This is an oral tradition of a living people. Extended writing about it is mostly 19th- and 20th-century: ethnographers, and also Anishinaabe authors and teachers. Midewiwin birchbark scrolls belong to one society, not to every community, and they are not a dated public archive.
The tradition may be much older than any of those writings. The writings are not the origin. An outsider’s book is an outside account even when the teller was Anishinaabe. A community teaching today is not the same document as a 19th-century collector’s notes. No century is assigned here as the start, because no contemporary source establishes one.
Original evidence → transmission / copy → translation / documentation → modern interpretation
01
Original evidence
Recorded oral tradition
The primary mode is oral teaching, ceremony, and language. That does not leave an autograph to cite.
02
Transmission / copy
Outside account
Much of what is in libraries was written by visitors or by collectors. Some was written by Anishinaabe people in syllabics or in English later. Those classes must not be merged.
03
Translation / documentation
Recorded oral tradition
Translation into English is documentation. It drops distinctions the language made. It is not the telling.
04
Modern interpretation
Modern scholarly reconstruction
Anthropology’s summaries are modern interpretations. This chart’s cell is a further shortening. Neither replaces a specific community’s account, and neither should be filled in where that account was not given.
The twenty-one questions
Asked of every system. Gaps are recorded as gaps. Nothing here is filled in to make a pattern prettier.
01
Where are we?
In living relationships among land, water, and cosmos, not on a simple mechanical map. Accounts vary.

Are there nonhuman intelligent beings?
Yes. Manidoog and other-than-human persons/beings.
Read every system on this question10
Can those beings become human or appear human?
Other-than-human persons are real in this record. Appearance and relationship are part of a living world; “become human” is the wrong mechanical frame.
Read every system on this question11
Are there multiple realms or worlds?
Spiritual dimensions intertwined with the lived world — not necessarily a stacked elsewhere.

Is there a central mountain, tree, pillar, axis, heart, or sacred center?
Land, water, and cosmos understood relationally rather than as a simple mechanical map. Not a Meru/Yggdrasil diagram.
Read every system on this question13
Is the world itself alive?
Creation understood relationally. Humans are embedded within living relationships; other-than-human persons are real. This is among the strongest “living world” records in the chart, without being identical to the working synthesis.

Has civilization or the world been destroyed or reset before?
Flood and re-creation traditions exist.
Read every system on this question15
Does history operate linearly or cyclically?
Flood and re-creation traditions exist. Time is not recorded here as a simple mechanical line or wheel.

Is there an opposing positive/negative force?
Other-than-human persons include powers that can help or harm. A single cosmic anti-god is not the record used here.
Read every system on this question17
What is humanity supposed to become?
To live inside right relationships — with land, water, cosmos, and other-than-human persons. Elders, ceremony, and dreams teach this; a factory destiny is not the frame.

Is reincarnation a destination, punishment, school, growth process, or something else?
Traditions vary. No single meaning is assigned here.
