Stacked worlds on an axis

Open the circuit

Primordial process → multiple worlds on Yggdrasil → many kinds of beings → humans in one world → several deaths → Ragnarök and a renewed world.

  1. 01

    Primordial processes

The cosmos is organized from them, not from a sole creator in this record.

  2. 02

    Yggdrasil / world axis

The joining structure. Multiple worlds hang on it.

  3. 03

    Æsir, Vanir, jötnar, elves

Other persons inhabit the set of worlds.

  4. 04

    Human in one world

Midgard is a slot among many, not the only floor.

  5. 05

    Several destinations

Death is not one door. Rebirth motifs are disputed and variable.

Time
A world-ending (Ragnarök) followed by a renewed world — catastrophe with a sequel, not endless identical cycles.
Agents
Gods, jötnar, elves, and others. Knowing via poetry, oral tradition, visionary material.
Human slot
Inhabitant of one world among others. No single moral telos isolated here.
Break
Ragnarök. Opposition is real in the poetry without being equal-good-versus-equal-evil principles.

Recorded claims

An evidence label is shown only where the kind of source is already established. No label means unclassified. A label is not a judgment. Source Needed means no source is attached yet. It does not mean the claim is false, weak, or disproven.

How we know

Where the evidence comes from, and how far it is from the people it describes. The labels are not a score. They do not rank traditions. A manuscript year, a tradition’s own claim, and a date from the ground are kept apart on the timeline.

The main mythic books are 13th-century Icelandic: Snorri Sturluson’s Edda around 1220, and the Codex Regius of the Poetic Edda around 1270.

Those writers were Christians, centuries after the pre-Christian North. Some poems are probably older oral material. How much older is argued, not stamped on the vellum. Runestones and bracteates are artifacts and rarely tell the stories. Adam of Bremen’s 11th-century description of Uppsala is an outside account. The tradition may be older than 1220. The surviving myth books are not.

Original evidence → transmission / copy → translation / documentation → modern interpretation

  1. 01

    Original evidence

    Recorded oral tradition

Eddic poems are the closest literary evidence, and they reach us already written in a Christian society. Skaldic verse is a related but different record.

  2. 02

    Transmission / copy

    Later copy of earlier text

Snorri’s prose is a medieval arrangement and explanation of older material, not a pagan liturgy taken down on site.

  3. 03

    Translation / documentation

    Modern scholarly reconstruction

Modern translations of Old Norse, and retellings, are another step. A retelling that smooths the sources is not the Codex Regius.

  4. 04

    Modern interpretation

    Modern scholarly reconstruction

Dating a poem to the Viking Age is a scholarly hypothesis when the manuscript is 13th century. Archaeology does not by itself confirm a stanza. This chart does not treat Snorri as an eyewitness.
