Zoroastrianism

Ordered creation opposed by destructive force.

Architecture

Ordered creation versus destructive force

Open the circuit

Ordered creation is opposed by a destructive force. Humans choose inside that struggle. Judgment and continuance; generally no rebirth. The clock ends in restoration.

  1. 01

    Ordered creation

Spiritual and material creation are both real.

  2. 02

    Destructive opposing force

Structural dualism — not a minor rebel inside an otherwise unopposed maker.

  3. 03

    Beneficent and destructive beings

    Both sides are populated.

  4. 04

    Moral participant

The human is a soldier of order, not a repeating pupil of rebirth.

  5. 05

    Judgment and continuance

Generally no reincarnation. Final restoration closes history.

Time
Toward final restoration. A moral-cosmic history with an end.
Agents
Beneficent and destructive spiritual beings. Knowing: revelation, scripture, ethical participation.
Human slot
To participate morally in the struggle.
Break
The destructive force is the architecture of opposition, not an afterthought.

Recorded claims

An evidence label is shown only where the kind of source is already established. No label means unclassified. A label is not a judgment. Source Needed means no source is attached yet. It does not mean the claim is false, weak, or disproven.

How we know

Where the evidence comes from, and how far it is from the people it describes. The labels are not a score. They do not rank traditions. A manuscript year, a tradition’s own claim, and a date from the ground are kept apart on the timeline.

The oldest Avestan manuscripts we have are medieval, mostly from the 13th century onward. The language of the Gathas is much older than those copies. A Sassanian written Avesta is reported by later Pahlavi books and does not itself survive.

Zarathustra’s date is not established. Scholarly guesses range over many centuries. The tradition may be far older than the oldest manuscript. Pahlavi works such as the Bundahišn and the Dēnkard are 9th century CE and later. They are not the Gathas. Do not fill the gap with a chosen century.

Original evidence → transmission / copy → translation / documentation → modern interpretation

  1. 01

    Original evidence

    Recorded oral tradition

The Avesta reached manuscript form through a long oral transmission. There is no autograph and no contemporary inscription that contains the Gathas.

  2. 02

    Transmission / copy

    Later copy of earlier text

Surviving Avestan codices are late copies. Pahlavi literature is a later traditional interpretation of a canon it says was damaged.

  3. 03

    Translation / documentation

    Modern scholarly reconstruction

Avestan was deciphered and translated in the modern period, with Zoroastrian priestly reading as one guide. The translation is not the recited text.

  4. 04

    Modern interpretation

    Modern scholarly reconstruction

A date for Zarathustra, or a reconstruction of “original” Zoroastrianism against later practice, is a hypothesis. It is not a line in a Gatha. This chart does not pick a century.
